Common Window & Door Problems (And When It’s Time to Replace Them)

Windows and doors rarely fail overnight. Most issues start small, then gradually get worse until your home feels colder, noisier, or less secure than it should.

Below are the most common window and door problems we see, what causes them, and how to tell when repair is no longer the best option.

Draughts and cold spots

If you can feel cold air around your windows or doors, something isn’t sealing correctly.

Common causes:

  • Worn or compressed seals
  • Frames that have moved slightly over time
  • Poor original installation
  • Older glazing that’s past its best

When replacement makes sense:
If draughts are coming from multiple windows or doors, replacement is often more cost-effective than chasing lots of small fixes.

Condensation between the glass

If you’re seeing moisture inside the double-glazed unit (not just on the room-side surface), the sealed unit has failed.

Why it happens:

  • Seal failure over time
  • Age-related breakdown of the unit
  • Temperature stress and movement

Sometimes the glass unit alone can be replaced, but if frames are ageing or several units have failed, full replacement is usually the better long-term option.

Stiff handles, locks or hinges

Windows and doors should open and close smoothly. If they don’t, it’s not just inconvenient, it can become a security issue.

Typical causes:

  • Misalignment over time
  • Worn locking mechanisms
  • Hinges dropping on heavier doors

If multiple components are failing or parts are no longer available, replacement can be the most practical solution.

Visible damage or warping

Cracks, bowing, or frames that look out of square usually point to deeper problems.

This can be caused by long-term weather exposure, ageing materials, or natural movement in the building. Once frames distort, seals no longer sit correctly, leading to draughts and heat loss.

Rising energy bills

Older windows and doors are a common source of heat loss in UK homes. If your heating is on more often but rooms still feel cold, your glazing could be a big factor.

Modern replacements offer improved insulation, tighter seals, and better overall thermal performance, helping your home stay warmer for longer.

Poor sound insulation

If outside noise feels louder than it should, your glazing may no longer be doing its job.

This is especially common with older double glazing or units where seals have failed. Modern glazing can significantly reduce road and neighbourhood noise.

A tired or outdated look

Even if everything still works, older windows and doors can make a home feel dated.

A new door or window upgrade can instantly improve kerb appeal while also boosting security and energy efficiency.

Repair or replace: how to decide

A repair may be suitable if:

  • Frames are in good condition
  • The issue is isolated
  • Parts are still available

Replacement is usually the better option if:

  • Problems are widespread
  • Units are older and underperforming
  • Security standards are outdated
  • You’re repeatedly paying for small fixes
