About Tommy's Windows
I'm Tommy, a local window and door installer based in Roade, with a builder's background and 14 years of fitting behind me.

Twenty years in the building trade
Started on the tools
I've been in the building trade for 20 years now. I started out as an apprentice bricklayer and got my qualifications in building and brickwork while I was working for a groundworks company.
Site work had its downsides. Getting rained off was part of the job, and the more of it I did, the more I realised I'd rather be working on people's homes than on new build sites. With domestic work you're dealing with real houses and real customers, and you get to see a job through from start to finish.
Learning to fit
Installing runs in the family. My dad was a window installer, working with a friend of his, and that's where I learned the trade. I went on to get my FENSA installation and surveying qualifications, and I've been fitting windows and doors ever since. That's 14 years now.

Why my building background matters
Plenty of fitters can take a frame out and put a new one in. Because I trained as a bricklayer first, I can also sort out the work around the opening, and I can spot a problem with an opening before the new frame goes in, not after. See my building alterations work.
- New openings
- Adding a window or door where there wasn't one before, set out and built properly.
- Widening and reducing
- Making an existing opening bigger or smaller to suit a new window or door.
- Window to door conversions
- Turning a window into French, patio or bi-fold doors, with the building work and the fitting done together.
- Lintels
- The right lintel for the opening, so the wall above is properly supported.
- Matching brickwork
- Bricks and mortar matched so the alteration looks like it's always been there.
- Problems spotted early
- Issues with an opening picked up at the survey, not halfway through the fit.
What keeps me going
The best bit of the job for me is right at the end, when the customer sees the finished work and they're properly chuffed with it. Knowing people are happy with what I've done is a big part of why I still enjoy this after all these years.
It's why I'd rather take my time and get a job right than rush off to the next one, and it's why a lot of my work comes through recommendations.
